People with disabilities are least likely to own a computer or use today's technology. Technology has the ability to offer more accessibility through new training/education and disability aids.

Our goal is to raise $45,000 for interactive display panels that allow people with disabilities to learn how to use today's technology and to continue learning life skills.

Teaching with interactive whiteboards offer many benefits for our individuals including; increased attention, interactive group learning options, increased retention, and much more.

Technology Initiative

Technology has the ability to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities. New technologies are able to offer new ways of learning, new ways for people to communicate, as well as new assistive aids. Ohio became the first state to sign a Technology First Executive Order that will place an emphasis on expanding access to technology for people with developmental disabilities.

At Ability Works, we are working towards integrating technology into our disability services through how we teach, how we engage, and how we play. We are excited to see where our technology initiative will take us, and how it will benefit our individuals. Our current goal is to purchase interactive whiteboards for every single room in our Adult Day Program and Career Academy.

Adding interactive whiteboards into our services offers our clients new opportunities to learn, and ultimately gain more independence in their lives.

What are some of the benefits of educating by using an interactive whiteboard?

  • Provide multiple means of engaging individuals and representing information through audio, graphics, video, text, etc.

  • Provide multiple means of expression: allows individuals to interact with content and show their understanding of content in a variety of ways such as type, drawing pictures, and more. Individuals who are unable to hold a pen are able to use their fingers to write and draw.

  • Allows for interactive quizzes, and group activities

  • Allows for group collaboration: individuals can work as a team to learn and practice material which boosts their engagement in the material and helps them to overcome education barriers.

  • Provides a safe space for individuals who prefer to work alone, to learn to collaborate as a group.

We kicked off this fundraising initiative at our 2021 Sandusky Donut Eating Contest, where we raised $8,845. Our goal is to raise a total of $45,000 to purchase interactive whiteboards for all three of our Adult Day Program rooms, and our Career Academy Classroom.
